View My Fine Art Painting Portfolio
Welcome to the portfolio of Jeff Smith.
My watercolour and mixed media paintings are inspired by the natural and man-made landscapes of my native North East England, and locations I have visited and documented on my travels in Britain, Italy and France.
Take a moment to look through the gallery, and please get in touch for more information.
Born in South Shields, Tyne and Wear, England
Lives in South Shields
As a young child I could occupy myself quietly for hours with only a pencil and paper. That has never changed.....
I studied at South Shields Grammar School for Boys, trained to be a teacher at Eaton Hall College of Education, Retford, Nottinghamshire and taught Art and also more recently Photography at St Joseph's RC Academy, Hebburn, until I retired in 2015.
Although I have experience of painting using oils and acrylics, I prefer to draw and to use watercolour and mixed media on paper.
I produce detailed and carefully observed drawings or paintings, and in my work try to combine my love of colour, line and texture in particular with my desire to represent my subjects realistically and true to life.
I feel a strong personal attachment to the natural and more especially the man-made landscapes of my native North East England, and locations I have visited and photographed on my travels in Britain, Italy and France. My artwork reflects my great interest in historic places, buildings, art and artefacts and my appreciation of the people from the past who helped to shape them.
I have long admired and been influenced by the work of a range of artists, including the landscapes of John Constable, the social observations and industrial landscapes of Spennymoor artist Norman Cornish, the mixed media techniques of Moira Huntly, and the fantasy illustrations of artists such as Alan Lee, John Howe and Tim Hildebrandt.
I am now exhibiting my work at a number of art
and craft fairs in the North East area.
